Accommodations

Our atmosphere is rustic, nested in nature. We offer comfortable quality rooms and a tasty variety of meals

Housing

Our Primate Research Station (monkey camp) provides not only the infra-structure for scientific research, but also accommodation for all research personnel and visitors at the Primate Center Lodge. Lodging for visitors is available in eleven rooms among four houses: the Loris Cabanas, Hanuman House, Lab Suite and Main Lodge.  Our shared dining and living areas are fairly open to the forest and lake and are designed for the practical needs of a research station facility.  Rooms are simple but comfortable; all have an attached tiled bath (with modern flush toilet), hot water and fan. Air-conditioning is available in 10 of the 11 rooms. There are 2 to 4 beds per room. Large sized family rooms have queen-sized beds and the room can sleep 4 persons. All rooms are screened against insects.

The main lodge has a large common area for relaxation, television, dining and audio-visual presentations. The lodge is well ventilated by fans and the breeze off the lake.

Location

The Primate Center Lodge (Smithsonian Primate Research Station) is located within a private patch of jungle about 3 km south of the town of Polonnaruwa. It is nestled on the shores of Lake Parakrama Samudra. Wild monkeys and other animals are omnipresent to entertain the visitor. Over 150 species of birds can be seen here. Most of our research is done within the Polonnaruwa Nature Sanctuary and Archaeological Reserve, situated just north of the town of Polonnaruwa.  See Getting There and learn more about the surrounding  area.

Transport

Long-term visitors are provided with daily transport by minibus between the work site at the Polonnaruwa Sanctuary and the Lodge. It is a 3-5 kilometer (10-15 minute) ride.  Local public transport (buses, auto rickshaws) is available for personal trips to and from town, three kilometers (10 minutes) away.  We also hire out bicycles.
